VIEWPOINT

Not long ago, the world watched as three gray whales, icebound off Point Barrow, Alaska, floated battered and bloody, gasping for breath at a hole in the ice.  Their only hope: somehow to be transported five miles past the ice pack to open sea. Rescuers began cutting a string of breathing holes about 20 yards apart in the six-inch-thick ice.

“For eight days they coaxed the whales from one hole to the next, mile after mile.  Along the way, one of the trio vanished and was presumed dead; but finally, with the help of Russian icebreakers, the whales Putu and Siku swam to freedom.

“In a way, worship is a string of breathing holes the Lord provides His people.  Battered and bruised in a world frozen over with greed, selfishness and hatred, we rise for air in church, a place to breathe again, to be loved and encouraged, until that day when the Lord forever shatters the ice cap.” (Craig Brian Larson, Leadership, Vol. 11, No. 2).

Melodie Beattie, a noted self-help author, often stresses the importance of gratitude.  She says, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough and more.  It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.  It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” If we believe Melodie Beattie is  right, it will make us appreciate Thanksgiving Day, as well as make us more grateful the other 364 days.

“Don’t let success go to your head or let failure go to your heart!”  That’s some advice my mother gave during our time together last week.  It’s worth listening to.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile, and a positive word!                                  RA

All Are Necessary

To put on Christ is to respect everyone. Instead of critiquing the shortcomings of others, seeing them through the eyes of Jesus means to offer compassion and companionship.  Instead of condemnation, it means to offer visions of forgiveness.

Even though none of us is perfect in every way, or has it all together, we together constitute in the Master’s hands a powerful force for good and light in the world.

An old fable tells of trouble in a carpenter’s shop.  The tools were in a tizzy. “Brother Hammer, you’re too noisy.”

“Me?   Brother Plane's work is all superficial. No depth.”

“Me? Brother Rule is always telling others what to do, measuring us all by his own standards.”

“Me?  It's Brother Screwdriver who drives us all crazy going round in circles.”

“Me?  Sister Sandpaper is always rubbing the wrong way.”

“Me?  Sister Saw goes back & forth endlessly.”

Suddenly the bickering ceased, for everyone heard the carpenter coming.  When he entered the shop, he put on his apron, went to his bench, and began to make a table.  He picked up Brother Rule, then Brother Plane, then Brother Hammer and Sister Screwdriver, then Sister Saw, and lastly Sister Sandpaper, whom he used to smooth all the rough edges.

To make a table on which to spread food for a hungry world, all the tools were necessary.  None was more important than the others.  Likewise in the fellowship of the redeemed.

CHANGE FOR CHILDREN

The Mount Dora Children’s Home has invited us to participate in a “Change for Children” campaign.

The goal is simple:  Give the children a better life.

Each family is invited to take home as many coin banks as you wish and fill them with spare change for the next three months.

We’ll have a “coin counting day” sometime in January.

Your generosity will give the children at Mount Dora haircuts, allowances, personal items, new clothes, spring trips, and many other daily needs.

Feel free to put the coin banks in business places or offices as well.  You may have other creative ideas to use them.
