VIEWPOINT
They say “politics and religion don't mix.” In
this year’s campaign, though, it seems that most of the leading
figures can't quit talking about religion. They say “separation of
church and state.” But
it seems like politicians have surely been preaching a lot of
sermons lately. Some of
them preach political sermons in the churches, right up there where
the preacher ought to be. You
might be able to separate the state from the church but it seems you
can’t separate the politician from the pulpit!
We hear leaders say, “I’m not going to force my values on
others.” But we would
ask, what is faith without values?
Another pertinent question is: What
is the state without the church? What
is a politician without visible values? What
is life without faith?
There’s a Bible character involved with politics in the gospel
story about Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10).
When Jesus passed through Jericho, it was like Tuesday
morning for old Zacchaeus. He
has to walk in the election booth and pull the lever.
Like today, there is a strong need for “change.”
Zacchaeus is either going to vote for change or he will
settle for the status quo. He
is either going to stand for the state or for a life of faith. He
is either going to vote for himself or for those he has defrauded. He
will either continue with Rome or make a change for Christ. On
the day Zacchaeus was called down out of that tree, he had to make a
choice. He has to cast
his vote. Who will he
vote for?
More importantly, for whom will we vote?
Regardless of your thoughts on the transient world of
American politics, for whom will you vote spiritually?
Will it be for the status quo of self-satisfaction?
Or will it be for the commitment to Jesus Christ?
I
look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile, and a
positive word!

FOR CHILDREN
The
Mount Dora Children’s Home has invited us to participate in a
“Change for Children” campaign.
-
The
goal is simple: Give
the children a better life.
Each
family is invited to take home as many coin banks as you wish and
fill them with spare change for the next three months.
We’ll
have a “coin counting day” sometime in January.
Your
generosity will give the children at Mount Dora haircuts,
allowances, personal items, new clothes, spring trips, and many
other daily needs.
Feel
free to put the coin banks in business places or offices as well.
You may have other creative ideas
to use them.
