"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you."  -James 4:10

VIEWPOINT

“I believe that the difference between Heaven and Hell is not so much the climate as the company. Living in a world populated by people like themselves would, for many, be Heaven.  And for others, it would, indeed, be Hell. (from The Gift by Richard Paul Evans).

Jimmy Pulliam recently called my attention to these words.  They remind us how very seriously the Scriptures describe our relationships in our spiritual family.

  • Live in harmony with one another (Romans 12:16).

  • Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God (Romans 15:7).

  • Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you (Ephesians 4:32).

  • Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.   Forgive as the Lord forgave you (Colossians 3:13).

  • Encourage one another and build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

  • Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling (1 Peter 4:9).

We would also do well to heed what Samuel Johnson once said, “Kindness is in our power, even when fondness is not.”

I look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile, and a positive word!                                                             RA

Churches in Romania

I am just back from two months of preaching in Romania.  This thank you letter is from the Romanian churches.  The gospel of our Lord could not go out in that nation without your sacrifice and prayers.  The Romanian brethren are thankful. – Harvey M. Starling

To all the U.S. brethren who help in the work of the Kingdom in Dolj, Valce and Arges Districts:

We greet you in the name of the Lord Jesus and send you our best wishes and tell you that we give thanks to God always for you. This letter of appreciation is from all seven congregations whom some of you have visited and of whom all of you know about.

Your great sacrifice financially helps to keep the church growing and developing. All of the congregations do serve and give as we are able. You have helped four of the seven have our own meeting places. Most of us are able to pay utilities, give some emergency help for food and medicine and pay a part of the yearly property taxes. You make possible the constant work of trying to reach more souls in our area by providing Bibles, printing and other efforts. You also provide Bible training in all the important Pitesti Training School each September.

The ten Romanian Preachers in the three districts are happy to preach the word without financial support but your faithful help for our travel expenses is vital to what we are able to do. The U.S. preachers and teachers who come regularly to work provide necessary instruction to all of the churches. However, we are glad to say that the Romanian men and women are growing in the faith and can carry more of the teaching responsibilities each year.

We say without reservation that we are thankful for all of you who have fellowship with us and especially for Harvey as he works with us full time to develop the churches and to plan for the future.  We are grateful for the two full time translators and secretaries you support who inspire the ladies and who help organize and keep the communication open between churches.

We ask that you continue to pray for us that we continue to grow and mature in the Lord.

Your brethren in the churches

(Signed by the Romanian brothers)

Welcome Back to School

Our “welcome back to school” project was a huge success!  We delivered baskets with over 400 snack items for each of the schools in our neighborhood (Renaissance Elementary, Renaissance Middle School and Langston Hughes High School).

Each of the school administrations expressed appreciation.

THANK YOU  to everyone who helped provide the items!

THANK YOU to those who helped label the items!

Families, congregations, schools, and youth groups across the U.S. are preparing to share their compassion and love with needy children by sending them a simple shoebox packed with toys, candy, hygiene supplies, and clothing. Members of the Churches of Christ distribute these boxes to children in poverty stricken countries who may have never received a present. With your help, thousands of children will have a reason to celebrate the holiday season.  Like the Magi of old, you'll bring a simple Christmas gift box to one that Jesus called "the least of these."  Filling your "magi Box" is an opportunity to help a child who otherwise might have very little in the way of gifts.  It is also a way to experience the simple joy of giving.

Important Notes for Packing Your Magi Box

Use a medium sized shoe box or plastic container. Wrap the lid and box SEPARATELY with wrapping paper.

Select the age and gender you would like to shop for and tape the appropriate label to the end of the box.

For Infants: please do not include clothing. Cloth diapers are preferred (with pins).

Pack the box with items from the list of “suggested items” in this brochure. ($20 - $30 value)

Important: Turn in $7 per box for shipping to the church office and we will mail one check for all the boxes.

Place a large, thick rubber band around the box and lid and deliver it to your closest collection center.

Please be sure to tape closed any bottles containing liquids such as shampoo, etc.

Suggested Gift Items

Toys: stuffed animals, balls, cars, dolls, yo-yo’s, etc. (Please keep age appropriateness and safety in mind.) For older children you may want to include a flashlight with extra batteries.

School Supplies: notebooks, paper, coloring books, calculators, rulers, glue sticks, crayons, pens, pencils, etc.

Books/Bibles: Please be language sensitive. We strongly encourage you to include a Spanish Bible/ New Testament in each box (see info from Gospel Advocate).

Hygiene Items: Soap, shampoo (NO conditioner), toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, washcloth, Band-Aids, lotion. (Please pack in plastic Ziploc bags)

Clothes: small t-shirts, underwear, flip-flops, caps or purses.

Candy: only individually wrapped hard candy. (NO chocolate) Please pack in plastic Ziploc bag.

Personal Notes: Feel free to add a note (in the appropriate language) and/or photo of your group.

Note: DO NOT include the following:  toy guns, knives, war-related items, chocolate, perishable food items, medicines, used items, fragile items, mouthwash, nail polish remover.

Boxes MUST be brought to the church by Sunday, September 27.
