VIEWPOINT

Donald Trump, the famous businessman, has a net worth of 2 billion dollars.  Would you like to have him as a personal friend?

There is a story about Trump's generosity with a stranger.  It is said that Trump's limousine broke down on the Garden State Parkway on the way home from Atlantic City during a weekend excursion.  An unemployed auto mechanic stopped to help, succeeded in getting the limo running and then refused to accept any payment for his services.  Trump was so impressed that the next day he sent flowers to the mechanic's wife and a certified letter stating that the man's mortgage had been paid in full.  Trump refuses to confirm or deny the story or say exactly what he did for the Good Samaritan.  “I don't do those kinds of things for publicity,” he said.

Wouldn’t we love a deal like that?  To have someone really rich taking care of us sounds awesome!  If we had friends with plenty of money and they would gladly help us, we would be free from many a worry.  It would mean financial security.  That kind of security, however, is hard to come by.  (Even Trump had to face bankruptcy.)  If you don't have an endless supply of money, can you ever be secure?

Jesus commented on security.  “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.  Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke 12:32-34).

How do you make for yourselves purses and wallets that will never wear out?  Give it away.  Give it to the poor.  Out of the treasures of your heart, give, and you will be secure in heaven and free from worry here on earth.

Even though it certainly still feels like summer across the country, most schools are back in session. Today we have a story for all of the teachers, students, and school personnel who are getting ready for another academic year. The humorous story is below.

-------------------

We made the appeal for help with the “Welcome Back to School” baskets Sunday morning, and I noticed that some of the snack foods had already come in by Sunday evening.  The dependability of our Cedar Grove family is so commendable!

I look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile, and a positive word!   RA

Back to School Good Behavior

Our teacher, Mrs. Cannon, would periodically leave the room and say, “I’ll be back in a few minutes.  Just work quietly at your desks on your math worksheets.”  Now, my friends and I tried hard to figure out just when Mrs. Cannon was coming back.  We would take turns going to the door to see if she was indeed making her return. Why this obsession about the exact timing of her return?  Because in her absence, we were throwing chalkboard erasers around the room and didn’t want to get caught by her sudden and unexpected reappearance.  Mrs. Cannon was a good teacher who was nice most of the time, but her wrath in response to willful disobedience was an awesome thing to behold.  Meanwhile, our classmate, Elaine, never worried about just when Mrs. Cannon might reappear.  Why? Because Elaine would be at her desk the whole time faithfully doing her math – faithfully doing what Mrs. Cannon asked her to do. Whenever Mrs. Cannon would return, she would find Elaine faithfully at work.  Elaine was so good!  (I wonder whatever happened to Elaine.)

The purpose of sharing this story – a story that some of us may have variations on – is to suggest an analogy to the gospel reading.  In the story, Elaine is doing the work her teacher has set before her.  So whenever her teacher returns, she is busily engaged in her work.  She has no need to fear the return of her teacher, unlike the boys in the story.  In our lives, the Rabbi – the Teacher – from Nazareth has given us work to do as well.  We are to live as those who belong to God.  We are to love as those who belong to God.  If we are faithfully engaged in such work for the sake of God’s realm, then we need not fear those times when Jesus enters our lives, when Jesus returns in the stranger, or alien, or outcast.  We will be ready, for our hearts are turned toward God, and we have been faithfully doing the work of love that we are given.      ( by Larry Hennig in Ready to Risk)

Families, congregations, schools, and youth groups across the U.S. are preparing to share their compassion and love with needy children by sending them a simple shoebox packed with toys, candy, hygiene supplies, and clothing. Members of the Churches of Christ distribute these boxes to children in poverty stricken countries who may have never received a present. With your help, thousands of children will have a reason to celebrate the holiday season.  Like the Magi of old, you'll bring a simple Christmas gift box to one that Jesus called "the least of these."  Filling your "magi Box" is an opportunity to help a child who otherwise might have very little in the way of gifts.  It is also a way to experience the simple joy of giving.

Important Notes for Packing Your Magi Box

Use a medium sized shoe box or plastic container. Wrap the lid and box SEPARATELY with wrapping paper.

Select the age and gender you would like to shop for and tape the appropriate label to the end of the box.

For Infants: please do not include clothing. Cloth diapers are preferred (with pins).

Pack the box with items from the list of “suggested items” in this brochure. ($20 - $30 value)

Important: Turn in $7 per box for shipping to the church office and we will mail one check for all the boxes.

Place a large, thick rubber band around the box and lid and deliver it to your closest collection center.

Please be sure to tape closed any bottles containing liquids such as shampoo, etc.

Suggested Gift Items

Toys: stuffed animals, balls, cars, dolls, yo-yo’s, etc. (Please keep age appropriateness and safety in mind.) For older children you may want to include a flashlight with extra batteries.

School Supplies: notebooks, paper, coloring books, calculators, rulers, glue sticks, crayons, pens, pencils, etc.

Books/Bibles: Please be language sensitive. We strongly encourage you to include a Spanish Bible/ New Testament in each box (see info from Gospel Advocate).

Hygiene Items: Soap, shampoo (NO conditioner), toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, washcloth, Band-Aids, lotion. (Please pack in plastic Ziploc bags)

Clothes: small t-shirts, underwear, flip-flops, caps or purses.

Candy: only individually wrapped hard candy. (NO chocolate) Please pack in plastic Ziploc bag.

Personal Notes: Feel free to add a note (in the appropriate language) and/or photo of your group.

Note: DO NOT include the following:  toy guns, knives, war-related items, chocolate, perishable food items, medicines, used items, fragile items, mouthwash, nail polish remover.

Boxes MUST be brought to the church by Sunday, September 27.
