VIEWPOINT

“Ietoga” is the Samoan word for “fine mat.”  It’s the token of appreciation, love and partner-ship.  It is the gift of honor.  And it’s the woven straw mat that hangs in the front of the Cedar Grove Building.

I was aware of that meaning.  We learned about the Ietoga and its significance when the Cedar Grove family was presented with the gift many years by Robert Martin.  We were highly honored to receive it.

What I didn’t know was that Cedar Grove is one of only two congregations to enjoy such a privilege.  That’s the relationship we have with the Martin family.  That’s why we treasure our fellowship with their work in the South Pacific.

To summarize the mission work in the Pacific Islands:  in 36 years, 32 congregations have been established in 17 island countries with thousands added to the Lord through obedience to the gospel message.

In addition the growth of the Pacific Islands Bible College has been remarkable.  From the humble beginning of one location, two instructors and 52 students, the PIBC now has 21 locations in 10 countries with 20 instructors and 1,664 students.

We give thanks to the Lord for what he has done and continues to do through Robert, Mary and Maria     (Acts 21:20).

---------------------------------

I would hurry to my place of shelter,
far from the tempest and storm (Psalm 55:8)

So many have been seeking “shelter from the storm” over the past week.  Our hearts go out to the many victims of the flooding and we offer sympathy to those who are grieving.  We are thankful, however, for the many ways that the Lord has been honored in the process of disaster relief.

In the midst of the cleanup and rebuilding, we are once again reminded to “set our hearts on things eternal” (Col. 3:1).  Nothing on earth can stand; we want to build our hopes on the solid rock of Jesus.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile, and a positive word!  RA
