VIEWPOINT In 1998, British
artists Tim Nobel and Sue Webster created an amazing work of art. In
ordinary daylight, it is simply an unsightly pile of trash—six
months’ worth of discarded newspapers, boxes, old shoes, wire, plastic
bags, and plastic bottles. Something magical happens, though, the moment
the overhead light is extinguished and the cast-off rubbish is
illuminated by a carefully placed spotlight. Suddenly, an astonishingly
clear shadow-image of the artists is projected against the wall. It’s
lines are so distinct and so exact that you can see their individual
likenesses. You might even recognize them if you met them on the street. Individually, each
piece of wire and broken bottle casts an insignificant shadow.
Collectively, they undergo an incredible transformation. And there’s a
lesson for us in this shadow art. Individually, none of us cast an
impressive shadow. Without a doubt, someone in our world sees us as
merely something to be stepped on, or stepped over, as they pass on
their way somewhere else. But God is no less
an artist than Tim Nobel and Sue Webster. In his church, he places all
of us in creative connections with our brothers and sisters. Through
inspiration, the apostle Peter caught a glimpse of this artistry. We are
not merely fellow church-goers, he wrote in his first letter, we are
living stones who are being built up into a spiritual house. When the
light of God’s presence shines in and through an apparently random
assemblage of imperfect people, we cast an astonishing shadow. The image
we project is the image of Christ himself. Incredibly, God, our Artist,
has a place for each one of us in his self-portrait. We are all unlikely
contributors to his image, his presence, in the world. In his essay
“Self Reliance,” Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “An institution is the
lengthened shadow of one man.” As
an institution, the church can sometimes look like a little more than a
miscellaneous collection of incompatible people.
But our Maker has designed us to cast a long shadow.
He’s ready to shine his light through us and upon us.
All we have to do is find our places. (from The
Herald of Encouragement) I look forward to
seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile and a positive word! RA

See
Only Christ You
are familiar, no doubt, with one of the most famous paintings ever
done by any artist: The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, that
classic portrayal of Christ and the twelve apostles at the table. Many
students of art history believe that the painting, when first created,
was somewhat different from the version which we now see. There was
initially, it is believed, an exquisite lace border on the tablecloth.
When, immediately upon completion, da Vinci invited a group of art
students to view his masterpiece, they were immensely impressed by the
delicate design of that lacework. They studied it intensely and
praised it highly. Upon
seeing the reaction of these young men, the artist took up a brush,
dipped it, and made a few long strokes across the canvas, obliterating
the lace. Then, with uncontrollable feeling, he shouted, “Now, look
at the face of Christ!” How
easily we take our view off of Christ and put it upon some nice
distraction. The Hebrew writer urged, “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the
author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured
the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of
the throne of God” (Heb. 12:2). Let us fix our eyes upon Him. Let us see His beauty, His love, His grace and His commitment to us. Then let us walk in His steps (1 Pet. 2:21-25). (Phil Sanders in Searchlight) |

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
In order to be ready for VBS, we will need help from all members. We will be having a meal each night before VBS and would appreciate your contributing drinks, chips, prepackaged cookies, cakes, etc. These can be brought any time -- now until VBS starts.
BUILDING CLEAN UP
In order to better utilize our supply room and classrooms, we are going to be cleaning out a lot of unused items. If there is anything that you have in these places that you don't to be thrown away, please let Melanie King or Sharon Shelton know. There are a lot of items that are taking up space that could be better used. We are hoping to get this done before VBS.
