VIEWPOINT Josh
McDowell related the comments made by an executive recruiter, a
“head-hunter” who goes out and hires corporation executives for
other firms. He told McDowell, “When I get an executive that I'm
trying to hire for someone else, I like to disarm him.
I take my coat off, then my vest, undo my tie, throw up my feet
and talk about baseball, football, family, whatever, until he's all
relaxed. Then, when I think
I've got him relaxed, I lean over, look him square in the eye and say,
‘What's your purpose in life?’ It's
amazing how top executives fall apart at that question.” “Well,
I was interviewing this fellow the other day, had him all disarmed, with
my feet up on his desk, talking about football.
Then I leaned up and said, ‘What's your purpose in life,
Bob?’ And he said, without
blinking an eye, ‘To go to heaven and take as many people with me as I
can.’ For the first time
in my career I was speechless.” “The
faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in
heaven . . .” (Colossians 1:5). ---------------- Following
a speech at a civic event, the preacher said to the young reporter
covering the event, “When you do your write-up, please don’t mention
the anecdotes I used. I may
want to use them in other speeches.” The
newsman obliged by inserting this line: “The minister told several stories which cannot be repeated here.” I
look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile, and a positive
word! RA

Thinking about Life IT
IS POSSIBLE
to learn all about the mysteries of the Bible and never be affected by
it in one's soul. Great knowledge is not enough. (John Bunyan, The Pilgrim's Progress) IT
IS
a serious waste to let a day go by without allowing God to change us. (Richard
Rolle, The Fire of Love) GOD
has granted you the morning, but he does not promise the evening.
Spend each day as if it were your last. (Lawrence
Scupoli, The Spiritual Combat) OUR
BODIES
have one fault: The more we cater to them, the more things they want.
… This is not a trifling matter. God will help us to gain mastery of
our bodies. (Teresa
of Avila, The Way of Perfection) GOD
ALLOWS
himself to be seen in ordinary things, even when they are darkened by
shadows. (Jean-Pierre
de Caussade, Abandonment to Divine Providence) IF
YOU
put up with yourself, why not put up with everyone else? (Guigo
I, Meditations) FIRE
TESTS IRON;
temptation tests an honest person. Sometimes we don't know what we can
do until temptation shows us what we are. (Thomas
à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ) THE
BEST TEACHERS
are trouble and affliction. These alone give us understanding. (John
Foxe, Christ Jesus Triumphant) IT
IS NOT POSSIBLE
to love an unseen God while mistreating God's visible creation. (John
Woolman, Journal) SPRINKLE
a seasoning of short prayers on your daily living. If you see
something beautiful, thank God for it. If you are aware of someone's
need, ask God to help. . . . You can toss up many such
prayers all day long. They will help you in your meditation and in
your secular employment as well. Make a habit of it. (Francis
de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life) |
FROM THE MAILBAG
Dear Cedar Grove Family,
I could never begin to thank you enough for all you have done for me. The flowers were beautiful and they brightened my days.
The delicious meals you prepared were great which Tommy really enjoyed also. Your calls, visits and especially the cards mean so much to me. I would especially like to thank Ms. Peggy’s class for cheering me up with all the Get Well cards from her little “angels.”
Your
prayers are lifting me up daily. We
are all so blessed to have the most loving and caring church family
In Christian love,

GEORGIA AGAPE
When Noah loaded the ark, the animals came two by two. The State of Georgia is asking Georgia AGAPE to provide shelter similarly by placing sibling groups together in foster homes. It is suggested that children who come into foster care adjust better when they can remain with siblings. AGAPE will be conducting three weekends of training classes shortly after school starts to prepare families who can help by foster parenting sibling groups. Please call Jayne Osburn at (770) 452-9995 before September 1 for more information on this training.
