Dear Church:
From Jesus A writer suggested that if Jesus were to write us a
letter, it would, perhaps, read as follows: Dear
Church: If I’m your head, make your plans ridiculously big! Be done with the drudgery of placid plodding, low aim, dwarfed planning and mini-dreams. I want you into the Word, on your knees, out of yourselves, above mediocrity, below my Lordship, about my business, beyond your sight and full of my Spirit. I want to see a glow on your face,
a leap in your pace, as you speak of my grace. Preach hell — hot, sin
— black, judgment — sure, repentance — necessary and salvation —
free. I hope you’ll run
— not walk; shout — not whisper; and speak with clarity — not
fuzziness as you preach the gospel to the world. I hope you’ll learn to swim any
river, climb any mountain, walk any distance, suffer any hardship,
experience any inconvenience, pay any price, and give any amount for the
cause of the Kingdom. I hope you’ll be liberal in love, long in
prayer, short on business, deep in giving, shallow in selfishness,
turned on to sharing the Word, and turned off to sin. Love, preach, teach, heal, love,
work, pray, give, bind, loose, love, learn, follow, evangelize, love,
urge, encourage, wait, love, above all . . . love! It’s by that and
nothing else that all the world will truly know you are my disciples.
I’m coming soon! Go for broke. Get rid of your worldly caution.
Pull out all the stops. Hold
nothing back. It’s full speed ahead! Trust me.
I have available now all you need to do the job. I’ll see you
soon!!
Love, Jesus
VIEWPOINT
“Always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else” 1 Th. 5:15).
The ways the Lord uses to remind us of important, basic lessons are as diverse as many
other aspects of his handiwork. Our sister-in-law, Janet, experienced this principle recently
and she has written about it. Here’s her story, called Blessed by a Biscuit:
“It was a beautiful fall morning. I had dropped my daughter off at school and was driving home.
Mentally I was clicking off the to do list for the next several days. In my middle aged wisdom
I had returned to college – there are three assignments due on Monday (paper, statistics case
study, play review) and then there is basketball fundraiser tonight – you get the idea. Rather
than go home and face these tasks I turned into a fast food drive through to grab a quick biscuit
for breakfast.
“As I sat in line I noticed the cool sports car in front of me black with silver stripes and a sunroof.
It is a remake of a design from my childhood years. My 16-year-old son would love one of those,
I thought. If I could afford it would I buy one for him? The line began to move and I returned to
thinking about the tasks I faced in the next few days – the too familiar knot began to form in my
stomach. It was my turn to order. “Good morning, just a chicken biscuit please.” I was given my
total and moved forward. The radio began to play What If Cartoons Got Saved. I have never liked that song, but this morning it lifted my spirits. I thought about seeing Scooby and Fred Flintstone in heaven.
“It was my turn at the window. I handed the money to the young lady at the window. She smiled
especially big and said, “I don’t need your money. The guy in the car in front of you paid for your
biscuit and said to tell you to have a good day.” Wow! I have heard of random acts of kindness,
but never had one happen to me. I thanked the young lady and pulled out of the drive through line.
Tears immediately spilled down my face. Blessed by a stranger. The driver of the black sports
car did not know me, did not know of the pity party trying to happen in my head, did not know of the
endless tasks ahead. Thank you, Jesus, for reminding me you are always there and that you care
about the struggles facing me. Oh, and thanks for the biscuit!
“This happened to me Wednesday morning, November 8. I have felt compelled to share it with any
that happen to read this story. It is a reminder and challenge to me to bless others lives.” (Janet Anderson)
---------------------- What a marvelous reminder as we think about kindness, thoughtfulness, and acts of service! Also, see if the article above doesn’t echo Chris’ challenge from Sunday evening. I
look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile, and a positive word!
