VIEWPOINTIn the documentary movie “Comedian,” Jerry Seinfeld is talking
to an up and coming young comic who questions his career choice.
He says, “I’ve sacrificed so much of life . . . the last three years have
been a blur . . . I see a lot of my friends making money . . . they’re
moving up.” Seinfeld looks at the guy incredulously and asks: “Are
you out of your mind?”
He asks the struggling comic, “Do you have something else you would
rather have been doing? You got other appointments or other places
you gotta be?” He then goes on to say, “This has nothing to do with
your friends. This [doing comedy] is a special thing; it has nothing to
do with ‘making it.’”
No wonder Seinfeld is successful. He lives for the purpose of making
people laugh. If he had never become a sitcom phenomenon, he would
probably still be working the comedy club circuit — and loving it.
We can learn something from his passion for comedy. If we’ll approach
discipleship and ministry with the same mindset, we’ll experience a level
of accomplishment far beyond our greatest expectations. We need to
remember what it is about and what it isn’t. It’s not about impressing our
relatives or making lots of money or outdoing the guys who graduated
with us. It’s about becoming like Jesus: doing what he did, living like he
lived, loving others like he loves others. This [serving Jesus] is a special
thing — it has nothing to do with making it.
The price of discipleship hasn’t changed. “If anyone would come after me,
he must
deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). To do less is to risk, in his words, gaining the world and losing your soul.
No
great comedian works for the money; they work for the laugh.
This is what we need: Not
to do our spiritual work for any recognition that comes our way, but for
the sheer joy of bringing Jesus into the lives of others.
For us, this is the special thing.
--------------- "Discipline
is that great quality few people use that enables them to be
constructively busy all the time. Even in discouragement and defeat,
discipline will rescue you and usher you to a new place to keep
constructively busy while you forget about doubt, worry and self-pity. Oh,
that more in this day would realize the absolute necessity of discipline
and the degree of growth and happiness to be attained from it." --------------- Here
