"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you."  -James 4:10

VIEWPOINT

Golda Meir, former Prime Minister of Israel, once admonished someone, “Stop trying to be humble, you’re not that good.”  As David Brickner puts it, “A false understanding of humility, along with a startling absence of the real thing, pervades our society.”

Why is that?  At least partly, it’s because there is a paralysis in our culture with respect to understanding truth.  Humility is based on a realistic perception of one’s self in relation to the truth about who God is and what He has done for us.  But society does not allow for the existence of “the truth about who God is” much less the gospel of what He has done for us.  Anyone who claims to make true statements about God is perceived as arrogant and intolerant.  There-fore one can’t possibly express conviction and confidence in truth and be considered humble.  It follows that uncertainty and doubt appear more humble – but it is a hollow humility.  It is empty of understanding and without substance.

Many Christians have a sense of uncertainty over how to express our convictions without bringing about accusations of arrogance.  “In the past humility was the opposite of pride; now it  has become the opposite of conviction” (Michael Horton).

The answer:  being humble is more important than the appearance of humility.  It is pride that makes us insist upon being considered humble.  A per-son of true humility is willing to be thought arrogant for the sake of  the  gospel  and for those who need to hear it.  Do not think of yourself   more   highly  than  you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you” (Rom. 12:4).

Bessie Moore gave us the poem about “Grandmother’s Legacy.”  We hope you enjoy it.  I look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile and a positive word!                                RA

A Grandmother’s Legacy

I remember many years ago,

If memory serves me right,

A hand that folded gently,

Yet held my own so tight.

A hand that promised love and hope

And nurtured all my dreams . . .

A hand that passed a piece of soul,

To me; that’s what it seems.

And as I started forward,

My life a distant star,

I found my hand was holding

A smaller one by far.

I held that hand so gently

So many years ago

And tried to place within it

Her very own rainbow.

Not the time has flown,

The years so swiftly gone.

The past somehow is clouded

By a piece of white chiffon.

And now I see that tiny hand

That held my own so tight,

Is passing on that love,

As if it were a light.

And so the purpose of my life

To me is now so clear,

To give up to the future the

Things I hold so dear.

The hand that held my own,

My mother’s hand so strong,

Has passed along through mine,

To my daughter it belongs.

And as I look upon her hand,

It’s tightly gripped, I see,

By yet another hand

That joins our family tree,

And to that tiny hand is passed

A legacy of love;

A love whose birth began
